Monday in Odessa

By Eileen Bluestone Sherman. Gr 5-9 Winning the storytelling contest is both an honor and a hardship for an eighth-grade Jewish girl in contemporary Odessa. Marina hopes that her parents will not apply for an exit visa and ruin her chances for the contest, but she understands that by entering the semi-finals her name will become well known and thus preclude her family ever leaving. Life changes when Misha and his family move into the same building. As the friendship between Marina and Misha grows, she learns of his yearning to emigrate to Israel. Contact with his family becomes dangerous, and suddenly Marina's family is also under surveillance. She at last accepts her parents' decision to apply for the visa. Times are tense as they slowly go through each painful step of the application process and waiting period. Sherman's novel, based on a true story, is a moving tale of courage in the face of prejudice. Characters are strongly developed and grow with their circumstances. Marina, in particular, is believable and likable, and her ambivalent feelings are deftly portrayed. Readers will have confidence that she will do just fine in America. Micki S. Nevett, Temple Beth Emeth, Albany, N.Y.
